Travelling through the Opole Silesia region along the A4 motorway, it is worth stopping for a short break and discovering a completely different world. It is a perfect opportunity to experience the region’s history during a break in your journey and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of former residences.

  • Niemodlin Castle
Niemodlin Castle is only about 10 kilometres from the Opole West exit, so it is well worth allowing yourself a short stop on the journey to discover this impressive residence with a long history reaching back to the medieval Piasts. In its present form, the castle delights visitors with its Renaissance architecture, beautiful arcaded courtyard, preserved Gothic details and traces of its 18th-century Baroque remodelling.
If you have more time, you should definitely consider a guided tour of the castle, during which you can see, among other things, the castle chapel and mysterious cellars. Even a shorter stop can be very enjoyable – we recommend relaxing in the castle park, where many rare species of trees grow, and your mood is sure to be lifted by an encounter with the herd of fallow deer living nearby. To round off this moment of respite in beautiful surroundings, it is worth tasting regional dishes in the castle restaurant.
  • Rogów Opolski Castle
Leaving the motorway at the Opole South junction makes it possible to reach the castle in Rogów within just a few minutes, situated right by a bend in an oxbow lake of the Oder. The Renaissance-Classical residence, which is said to have once been the seat of the Knights Templar, now serves as a branch of the Provincial Public Library. Some of its rooms have been opened to visitors, and it is also possible to learn about the history of the library’s most valuable collections.
Surrounding the castle is an extensive English-style park with magnificent trees and flowering shrubs. The historic gloriette is an interesting point for a stroll, ideal for a short rest during the journey. The park and courtyard invite travellers to stop for a moment, admire the landscape and feel the atmosphere of the former residence before continuing their route through the Opole Silesia region.
  • Museum of the Silesian Piasts in Brzeg
It would be a real shame not to leave the motorway at the Brzeg junction to visit the castle in this town. The splendid Renaissance seat of the Legnica-Brzeg Piasts now serves as a museum, but even a short stop is enough to feel the unique atmosphere of the place. The very entrance through the gate, with its beautifully carved decoration depicting the genealogy of the Piasts, as well as the arcaded courtyard in the spirit of the Italian Renaissance – one of the most beautiful in Poland – is worth the detour. If we decide to devote more time to sightseeing, we will see, among other things, a model of old Brzeg, an exhibition of ducal sarcophagi, an exhibition of Silesian art, as well as the history of the people from the Borderlands who settled here after the Second World War. Turning off to visit the castle is an excellent opportunity to combine the journey with a fascinating lesson in history.
